It is my understanding that iMovie 6 supports HDV 720p and 1080i. If you have a camera that shoots those formats, you should be OK.
I would really stay away from hard-drive, hi-def camcorders though. Unless you have a massive amount of storage space, you’ll have no place to store your video. Hi-Def, real hi-def, takes up a lot of space. And the real drawback to hard-drive video is that hard drives crash and, if it ever does, you’ve lost all of your video.
For the average user (consumer to semi-pro) tapes just make more sense. You can always re-capture a tape but once a hard drive goes, it’s gone.
If you want to use HDD type of camcorder with your Mac you should upgrade to iLife ‘08, iMovie ‘08 supports some HDD camcorders. Otherwise stick with MiniDV camcorders that record as DV or HDV.
iMovie HD is compatible with any of the tape based cameras that record in the HDV format.
