HOW DO I CONNECT A MINI DV CAMCORDER TO A COMPUTER VIA FIREWIRE?

I hit the Canon Elura 100 Mini DV camcorder and I am disagreeable to enter it to my PC via firewire so I can designate my videos to my PC to edit them.
When I enter my camcorder to my PC with the firewire null happens. I don’t undergo what to do from there. Can someone gratify verify me what to do or what the difficulty strength be.
-My PC has windows XP and all the required RAM and sufficiency round space.

    Did the Canon include any software to install on your PC before making the connection?
    Does the camcorder need to be in the “on” or “play” position?
