Most camcorders use a FireWire (IEEE 1394) interface to transfer data from the camcorder to the PC. Some newer models use USB. You will also need the appropriate software. The software converts the data from the DV (digital video) format to mpeg.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don’t come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

You can do this yourself with a firewire cable. If your hp laptop does not have one you can get one for the PCMIA slot that is easy to install just plug it in for less than $30 online. StashSpace.Com has a software to facilitate this that is very easy to use.
Another option is to send your tapes to StashSpace.Com to do this for you.
They will encode your tapes into digital files that they can burn immediately to DVD or you can use their online editor to watch, share, and create custom DVDs.
It costs $7 per hour tape for the encoding and $15 for a DVD. They are running a promotion for the holidays where you can get the encoding for FREE with a premium account. The premium account is $99.95 a year and lets you access the video from any computer e.g. you get video storage, and high quality video sharing with this account
Check them out at http://www.stashspace.com or give them a call. Good Luck!

Try it, but I think you have to have a software, and/or blank dvd disks. Check the manual if you still have it.
