ARE THERE ANY CAMCORDERS THAT TRANSFER VIDEOS TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE?

    Not the way you want to do it.
    There are some special external hard drives that have firmware built-in to give them some intelligence. I am firly certain they work only with camcorders that write to DV, DV Widescreen and HDV formats.
    Sony makes one for their HVR and XDCAM series camcorders and Focus Enhancements makes a couple of different ones for miniDV tape based camcorders – and in both cases, the external hard drives connect using a firewire cable to the camcorder’s firewire/DV/IEEE1394/i.LINK port.
    But the “dumb” external drives built specifically to hold computer data can’t deal with the data stream directly – which is why the computer is needed… plus, USB is a bursty protocol and can’t keep up with streaming high quality video – but Firewire can…
